Richard Due was born 1862 in Virginia. He attended the University of Kentucky for one year, then joined the Confederate Army. He left after being wounded at the battle of Shiloh. He taught school in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri before moving to Texas in 1884

There he helped organize the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, originally a Masonic organization. Due moved to California in 1894 to become the Grand Master of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows there. Due returned to Texas in 1899 where he taught school for a year before leaving for Colorado.
Upon his return to Texas in 1906, Due helped organize local lodges of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows under the name the Modern Woodmen of America. Due died on May 7th, 1938.
